this is why it's bad to lie

I was cutting a new client's hair today and he told me he and his wife just moved here from Tokyo so they could attend Columbia University. They have only been in the states two weeks and he had lots of questions. He asked all about me and my husband and our favorite spots in the city. Then he said "do you have any children?" I said "yes, a 15 month old".

This is when I have to decide whether or not to tell the client that I have a sick baby and go into a 10 minute explanation (making things totally awkward), or just lie and pretend that everything is totally normal. I decided i didn't feel like getting into it and to lie if he asked. He did. I have to admit I was not prepared for all the questions he had.

"so she is probably walking and starting to talk"...He says
"yes, she is. It's so cute" I reply
(client)"what was her first word?"
(me)"ummmmm, daddy"
(client)"is she with a babysitter?"
(me)"yeah, we just have one 4 days a week"
(client)"what's her baby sitter's name?" (we had been talking about common American names earlier in the convo)
(me)"her name? it's Marian. That's right, Marian" this was a name I pulled out from the movie we watched last night.
(client)"babysitters are very expensive, aren't they?......Do you take your daughter to central park?"

Then he started asking if most women in America work right after having a baby, was it hard for me to not sleep through the night when she was a newborn and many other questions that resulted in many, many more lies.

I had to keep going. I had to, for my country. I was getting flustered, but I would have gotten much more flustered had I fessed up to my 10 minutes of lies and just said "I don't have a babysitter named Marian, I got 8 blissful hours sleep every night when she was a newborn, she can't talk yet and she hasn't ever gone down the big slide I pretended that she did, ok? Happy?"

Most of the time it doesn't come to this, but this man was new to the states and was very curious. He was just trying to have a conversation and he was very sweet/polite and smiling so big with each question. The only reason all of his questions bothered me is that it was stressing me the freak out! I just worry about him coming back and me not being able to keep track of all my hundreds of lies.

This is why it is bad to lie. It's the only reason I know of, because I have never ever done it before in my life. Not even as a teenager. Not even when I spilled an entire gallon of lemonade on the kitchen floor when I was 5 and told my dad it was Nathan.

Bye :)

Oh yeah, these are pics of our little birdie yesterday. Click here for the rest. Something p'd her off because she decided to throw up on me three times in one second.

But isn't this picture of her listening to story time ser' so ador'?

Hey! You don’t know me, but I had to say that the three of you crack me up. Your blogs are so funny! I admire the fun you have, and the observations you make about other people, yourselves, random objects, and your precious little Piper. I laughed at this post so much…but not more than the one where Piper’s giving you the bird. I hope that in some little way I can send this blog comment into bloggerspace filled with all my best wishes and thoughts, and everything else…I found your blog through the Bennions. I’m Collin’s oldest sister, Natalee’s best friend from HS…so you can blame them for my blog stalking! ;-) Cheers! Thanks for making my day! No lie =) ~Megan

Hey this is Scott's wife. Not that you can't read, "Scott and Andrea" and assume. Your blog is funny, and your little girl is adorable. I am FREAKIN jealous you cut the best character in Sixteen Candle's hair! That is like my fave movie of all time. I probably would have peed my pants when he walked through the door.
Scott is pretty proud of his unfortunate hair styles, and I was unlucky enough to have seen some of those pictures! My favorite is when it was almost past his shoulders and he'd straighten it and do the shwoosh over bangs. I sure hope you were still in Cedar to witness that one!
