| Piper is continuing to do well. As of 7/12/07 she is weighing 3lbs, 15 oz. Reagan and I met with her doctors last week. They explained to us the procedure that they would like to perform on Piper, once she has reached the birth weight of a normal baby. The procedure is called a mandibular distraction. They will stretch out her jaw over the period of a week or so using a surgically implanted device hooked to both sides of her jaw. The desired result will be to open Piper's airway more, by allowing her tongue to lie flat in her mouth. Currently it is forced to the rear of her mouth, constricting her airway. Upon recovery, if Piper's breathing does indeed improve, then she may be able to come home and live with us! Yay. Reagan had a chance today to help give Piper a bath. It is very cool to see Piper without all of the tape and tubes on her face. |
